Discovery Park

Discovery Park in a beautiful 534 acre park on the west side of Seattle. We went there in part to do a bit of hiking, Zosia on my back and Konrad in the stroller, but promised Konrad he would be able to see a lighthouse when we got there. Unfortunately, the lighthouse was being renovated and was completely covered. Luckily there was plenty to occupy the children, not the least of which was the beach on Elliot Bay. We realized this was the first time our children had played on an ocean beach!

Small clearings with lupine and amazing coniferous forests dominate the landscape up until the coast.

Look! It's the ocean!

Picnic near the beach.

It was really too cold to get wet but the kids were dying to splash around in the water, so we improvised.

Looking for the perfect stones to throw into the water.

Who can throw the farthest?

Boy against nature.

We enjoyed watching this beautiful great blue heron forage for food.

. . . . until we saw this sign and wondered what the shellfish were doing to the wildlife if is wasn't safe for humans to eat! Most of Discovery park has historically belonged to the US Army and was known as Fort Lawton. It was not clear to us exactly how the shellfish became so toxic, but it was depressing to see such a sign when outwardly to the untrained eye, Elliot Bay looked so clean.
